Sustainable mobility - Pedal-assisted hydrogen bikes

Experimental project for "Smart Cities and Communities and Social Innovation" Capo d'Orlando-Sicily: the experimentation involved the construction of two pedal-assisted bikes powered by hydrogen and a smart parking system with the possibility of booking via smartphone.

i-NEXT project

Smart City “i-NEXT” project: presented in Capo d'Orlando, Sicily in December 2015, the application is unique in Italy and one of the first in Europe to promote sustainable innovation in transport sector.

For this project were manufactured electric vehicles and fuel-cell with infrastructure oriented to the optimization of the interaction between the demand for energy, the non-programmable production from renewable energy sources (RES) and the energy storage.
The Capo d'Orlando and Palermo municipalities were involved to test and demonstrate the achievements in the field of mobility, logistics, smart buildings, smart grid, energy efficiency, storage and production of electricity from RES.

The official presentation of the event was held in the presence of the National President of the CNR, the Vice President of Italtel and the rector of the University of Palermo. In addition to the CNR and Italtel there were numerous high-level technical partners involved in the project: the University of Palermo, Exalto, Avens Plus, TRE Tozzi, Muovosviluppo.

The project won the Smart Communities Award of Smau Naples in 2015.

Bike

Hydrogen bike develop by Advanced Technology Institute of Energy laboratories of National Research Council (CNR-ITAE) in collaboration with Tozzi Renewable Energy (TRE S.p.A.).

Compared to other pedal-assisted bikes currently on the market, this prototype replace the electric power system with the hydrogen, guarantees, at same weight, more autonomy and a very short charging time: 15 minutes compares to 6-8 hours required for conventional batteries.
It is in the National Research Council's intentions to continue with this prototype of a special bike-sharing project involving the creation of a fleet of bikes available to citizens for getting around the city.
It was estimated that the fill up will cost about 18€ and thanks to the solid-state storage system, this bike will circulate for 150 km, which would result in approximately 12 cents per kilometer on cost of getting around the city.

The contribution of H2planet

H2planet contributed to realize the ambitious project of micro fleet which includes the total elimination of the power batteries with a total solution fuel-cell powertrain.

The metal hydrides system and the power plant were fully customized, from the color of the high energy storage cartridge to the ultracapacitor system.

The bike configuration that allows insertion of the refill cartridge inside the bicycle steering column ensures maximum safety with a great advantage from the aesthetic point of view.

This bike is now, the hydrogen fuel-cell prototype with best design and technical characteristics thanks to the combination of last generation fuel-cell technology and the advanced low-pressure energy storage system.
