The model "Hydrocar" moves through the operation of a particular fuel-cell that transforms the chemical energy of hydrogen directly into electricity through a chemical process very simple as effective: reverse electrolysis.

This model, equipped with a reversible fuel cell, uses PEM (proton exchange membrane) to do both the electrolysis reaction that the reverse process. Using the fuel cell mounted on Hydrocar and providing water and electricity through a photovoltaic panel is possible to produce small amounts of hydrogen.
Once accumulated a certain amount of fuel, you link the fuel cell to the electric motor and the reverse reaction begins: electricity is produced and, macroscopically, you see the car moving.

In this case, the same cell provides hydrogen AND uses it: actually a petrol station on board!

The peculiarity of this cell is the fact that it can work both ways: electrolysis first (divides distilled water into hydrogen and oxygen) and reverse electrolysis (hydrogen recombines with oxygen and produces electricity).

The reactions that take place within the fuel cell are reversible oxydation-reduction:

Electrolysis (electrolyser):
- Anodic reaction (oxidation): H2O --> 1/2 O2 + 2 H + + 2 e-
- Reaction Cathodic (reduction): 2 H + + 2 e- --> H2

Reverse electrolysis (fuel cell):
- Reaction Anodica: H2 --> 2H + + e -
- Reaction Catodica: 1/2 O2 + 2 H + + 2 e- --> H2O

You will have the possibility to make funny experiments both with electrolysis and with its reverse process (fuel-cell). These two processes are the base of future research and energy conversion technology.
